School of Dentistry at the University of Mississippi
The School of Dentistry at the University of Mississippi offers a four-year bachelor's degree that serves as a pre-doctoral degree in dentistry, preparing students to move into the higher field of doctorate study. Coursework includes occlusal disorders, fixed partial dentures, pain, fear and anxiety, periodontal diseases, operative dentistry orientation, pulpal disorders, esthetic problems, and essentials of oral-maxillofacial surgery. Class sizes are restricted to approximately 35 students and preference is given to Mississippi residents. Candidates are required to know CPR and other life support emergency techniques, have complete use of vision and hearing, and must take the American Dental Association Dental Admissions Test. Financial aid is available through loans, grants, and work study programs. There are also dental scholarships such as those for sophomore medical students and students showing financial need.

Meridian Community College
Meridian Community College offers two programs for students just starting out in the dental field who would like to work in support professions in the dental office. Associate degrees are available in dental hygiene and dental assisting, to be completed in two years. A summer of work experience is also required. Classes include fundamentals of dental hygiene, dental anatomy, dental radiology, periodontics, chairside assisting, dental health education, and clinical experience. All applicants must have a background check, drug test, hepatitis B vaccination, CPR certification, and a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in any transferring classes.

Pearl River Community College
Mississippi students may study for an associate degree in dental hygiene technology at Pearl River Community College. Class topics include radiographs, oral prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, sealants, head and neck exams, periodontal exams, and non-surgical periodontal therapy. Only 15 students per year are admitted to the program; enrollees must submit a health test form. While on campus, students may join Sigma Phi Alpha, the national dental hygiene honor society. Students may appreciate knowing that 100 percent of Pearl River students pass their national dental hygiene board exam and the clinical state board exam; Pearl River also helps to achieve a 100 percent job placement rate for its graduates.
