Trees And Plants In Victoria Texas

Located in southeast Texas along the Gulf Coast, Victoria offers home gardeners fertile soil and a warm climate all year. Considered the "crossroads of the coastal bend," Victoria resides in USDA hardiness zone 9a. Does this Spark an idea?

Trees

Trees native to the Victoria area include pecan, cypress and oak trees. The magnolia tree holds a special place in the heart of Southerners, and Victoria is no different. The native Texas tree produces large white flowers that emit a rich fragrance. The evergreen tree tolerates heat and droughts and can grow up to 60 feet tall.

Flowers

The Victoria County Master Gardener's Association chose eight flowering plants from the all-American selection that suit Victoria's climate. Three zinnias made the cut. The double Zahara cherry, double Zahara fire, and Zahara starlight rose bloom profusely in Victoria gardens and require little maintenance. Winter gardeners can grow the Viola F1 Endurio, also called sky blue martien, which presents cool blue flowers throughout the winter regardless of the weather.

Edibles

Victoria gardeners can grow lavish vegetable and herb gardens. Asparagus, potatoes and tomatoes all thrive in Victoria. Gardeners can grow olives for their fruit or as an ornamental shrub. The Victoria County Master Gardener's Association recommends that citrus fans grow the improved Meyer lemon, an easily container-bound tree that produces a sweet lemon and attracts pollinators.
