The Green Mountain State has many schools that produce trained medical personnel.
The state of Vermont has a number of school that offer medical training, from a college of medicine to technical schools that prepare students for careers in allied health fields. Although Vermont is a small state in size and population its schools represent a commitment to providing medical training and subsequent care equal to that of any large state.
University of Vermont College of Medicine
Located in Burlington, the University of Vermont's College of Medicine is the only school in Vermont that trains future physicians. Founded in 1822, it produces over 100 physicians per year and has trained over 35 percent of the physicians currently practicing in Vermont. The school also offers a MD-PhD program for physician/scientists. This program requires an average of seven years to complete with PhD degrees awarded in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Clinical and Translational Science, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Neuroscience and Pharmacology.
Vermont Tech
With its main campus at Randolph Center, Vermont Technical College, or Vermont Tech, offers a wide variety of programs including nursing. Two programs are offered; one for practical nurses and the other that award an associate degree for registered nurses. According to Vermont Tech's website, in 2009 when its graduates took the national examination for nurses, 94 percent of those studying to become registered nurses and 96 percent of those studying to become practical nurses passed the exam. Although Randolph Center is the main campus, nursing classes are offered at 11 locations around the state.
Southern Vermont College
Southern Vermont College in Bennington, is a private independent college. It offers an Associate in Science Degree in Radiologic Technology which prepares students for entry level positions as radiology technicians. Southern Vermont gives these graduates the opportunity to stay and work toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiologic Sciences. This degree program provides the opportunity to study more advanced imaging techniques and obtain training for career advancement opportunities. In addition, Southern Vermont College offers an Associate Degree in Nursing which prepares graduates to be licensed as registered nurses. For students who complete the associate's degree program, Southern Vermont presents the opportunity to continue studying nursing and obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
Castleton State College
Located in Castleton, Vermont, this school's nursing program offers three options for students; an Associate of Science Degree; a Bachelor of Science Degree; and a completion program for nurses who earned an associate's degree at another institution and are now interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree. Castleton also offers a physical therapy program. Student who earn a bachelor's degree in this program are guaranteed admission to Sage Graduate School in New York where they can work toward a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
