Fine Community Colleges In The Bronx

The New York Botanical Gardens include a School of Professional Horticulture.

The Bronx is the northernmost of New York City's five boroughs, and the only one to be primarily situated on the mainland. The borough is diverse in ethnic origin and economic status, with very rich and very poor neighborhoods. There are several colleges in the Bronx, including three accredited community colleges.

Bronx Community College

Founded in 1957, the Bronx Community College is one of the most diverse schools in the Americas, with over 100 nationalities represented in its student body. The grounds occupy 43 acres along the banks of the Harlem River, and provide the campus with a park-like setting. Academically, the school offers a range of vocational and technical programs, awarding certificates and associate degrees. Credits may be transferred to other institutions.

Hostos Community College

Hostos Community College, like Bronx Community College, is administered by the City University of New York. It was founded in 1968, in response to the South Bronx's need for higher education opportunities for the local Hispanic population. Named for Eugenio María de Hostos, a pioneering Puerto Rican educator of the 19th century, the school offers bilingual instruction in a variety of disciplines.

Monroe College

Founded in 1933, Monroe College offers a variety of vocational and technical programs, built around a liberal arts academic core. Monroe goes above and beyond the CUNY community colleges in offering bachelor's degrees and graduate programs as well as certificates and associate degrees. The school operates satellite campuses in suburban New Rochelle and on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.

The School of Professional Horticulture

The Bronx has many industry-specific vocational schools. One that deserves mention is the School of Professional Horticulture, a part of the New York Botanical Garden. Programs include botany, horticulture, and landscape design, and continuing education courses are also available to the community. The school awards certificates and associate degrees, and credits can be transferred to other schools.
