Exercise After A Stroke

After a stroke occurs and the recovery process has gotten well on its way, the next step is to start exercising. Always remember to ask your doctor first before starting any exercise program. Here are a few exercises that will prove beneficial to your on-going recovery.

Instructions

Exercise After a Stroke

1. Move that neck and head. In a sitting position with both feet flat on the floor, bend your head downward towards your chin. Slowly raise your head upward towards the ceiling, then down looking straight ahead. Next, bring your right ear down towards your right shoulder, straighten head, and repeat movement on the left side.

2. Roll your shoulders. Keep your shoulders loose by rolling them forward a few times. Then, turn you head to your right shoulder looking as far over your shoulder as you can. Repeat step looking over your left shoulder. Next, move shoulders together in an up, down motion just as you would when shrugging.

3. Work those arms. Start by clasping your hands together on your lap, then slowly raised clasped hands up over your head. Next, bring your clasped hands half way down in front of you. In this position, rotate clasped hands from top hand to bottom hand causing a twisting motion in your arms.

4. Strengthen your legs. You may have to use your hand to help your affected leg. First, from a sitting position, stretch one leg out in front of you with your knee straighten, and then lower. Stretch your leg out to the side and pull it back in again. Now cross the same leg and slightly lean forward in your chair and then back, uncross leg. Repeat all steps on the opposite side.
