Diagnostic medical sonographers are health professionals who use ultrasound waves to view internal organs, monitor pregnancies and diagnose illnesses. The DMS profession is expected to increase by up to 18 percent by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. DMS training typically lasts one to two years, offered as certificate or associate's degree programs by community colleges and vocational schools. This career training school offers an Associate of Science degree in diagnostic medical sonography at its Citrus Heights campus. Students study ultrasound concepts dealing with the abdomen and pelvic areas, as well as the vascular system and superficial structures (e.g., limbs). This community college in northern Orange County offers a DMS program, available as a certificate program (three semesters plus summer session) or an associate's degree (two-year program). Through classroom instruction and clinical internship, students learn ultrasound concepts dealing with OB/GYN, the abdomen, superficial structures and the pelvis. The school lists prerequisite courses that include anatomy/physiology, college algebra and English, and survey of medical terminology. Acceptance is based on a graded formula taking GPA and previous radiologic experience into account.

Located in Los Altos Hills, this school offers an 18-month certificate program in DMS, combining classroom and clinical experience and geared to Allied Health graduates or professionals who are extending their education. Topics include OB/GYN, sectional anatomy, vascular sonography and technology and advanced sonographic principles. Prerequisite courses include college math, physics, English, anatomy and physiology. In addition, students must have a bachelor's degree in a related field or have completed a two-year course in radiology, registered nursing or a related field.
