Medical Sonography & Ultrasound Schools In Indiana

Medical sonography--ultrasound--is the use of ultra-high-frequency sound waves to image and diagnose parts of the body. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for diagnostic medical sonographers are predicted to increase by 18 percent by 2018. A person can qualify to be entry-level sonographers through both degree and certificate/diploma programs. Students in Indiana will find several schools offering programs in various aspects of medical sonography.


Indiana University Northwest


Located in Gary, Indiana, this college offers a Bachelor's Degree in Radiologic Sciences, with an optional emphasis on Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS). Courses include sectional imaging anatomy, ultrasound physics and three semesters of clinical practice. General education prerequisite courses include written and verbal communications, college math, and anatomy and physiology--all of which may be taken at the university or at another accredited school.

Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis


Purdue University offers a Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology through its School of Medicine. An advanced program for currently credentialed radiographers, this degree plan offers a clinical track for specialization in specific areas of medical imaging--including ultrasound--or a non-clinical track offering theoretical education in all forms of medical imaging. Additional general education requirements include college math, verbal and written communication courses, and introductory psychology. General education may be completed at any accredited school.

University of Southern Indiana


The University of Southern Indiana in Evansville offers a bachelor-level DMS program through its College of Nursing and Health Professions. The program includes two years of standard preparatory general education courses and a combination of laboratory and clinical work. After completing general education, students focus on general sonography in year three, and a choice between cardiac and vascular sonography in the fourth year.
