There is only one diagnostic medical sonography program in Maine.
Diagnostic medical sonography refers to the production of detailed computerized images of the body using high frequency ultrasonic waves. Often called ultrasound, sonography is a critical tool used by health care professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of medical disorders and injuries. There is currently only one school in Maine offering training in diagnostic medical sonography. However, there are online schools and a program in New Hampshire that allows students to pursue clinical training in their home region while receiving theoretical instruction through distance learning or by commuting.
Kennebec Valley Community College
Kennebec Valley Community College offers a 16-month advanced certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. Coursework includes abdominal sonography, clinical physics in ultrasound, obstetrical and gynecological sonography, abdominal anatomy and pathology, extra-cranial and venous duplex techniques and diagnostic interpretation. The curriculum also requires hands-on clinical practicum training in a clinical setting throughout the program.
