Westchester County, New York, has a variety of employment opportunities in the fields of medicine, research and technology. It is home to IBM, Bayer Industries and six major hospitals. Students can get a career-based education at one of the area's technical schools in preparation for entering the work force.
Westchester Community College
With 13,000 students a semester--the highest enrollment of all schools in the county--Westchester Community College prepares students for careers in specific technical fields through its Associate in Applied Science degree, or A.A.S. Programs include civil technology, computer information systems, computer security and forensics, electrical technology, mechanical technology, networking, office technologies, radiologic technology and telecommunications technology, with one specific to Verizon. Skilled occupational training also is offered with certificates in telecommunications technology, networking, computer programming and digital filmmaking. Tuition for a full-time resident student starts at $1,825, as of February 2010, and $4,563 for nonresident students for a 12-credit semester. Part-time tuition is $153 a credit for residents and $383 a credit for nonresidents. Pell grants are available for state residents and federal aid for all students.

Center for Ultrasound Research and Education
The Center for Ultrasound Research and Education offers specialized training in ultrasound technology, or training for "sonogramers." Through this training, students can prepare for jobs as ultrasound technicians, medical instrument technician, sonographer, ultrasound technician and ultrasound sonographer in the health care industries. Sonographers use sonogram technology to detect diseases. The need for skilled sonographers continues to increase as the technology becomes vital to medical diagnosis and disease detection. The school offers one-year programs for students who want to accelerate, and two-year programs. Courses are from one to six weeks in duration. Students must be registered or eligible to register as sonographers, nurses, mammography technicians or the equivalent. Classes are offered in the daytime or evening, and tuition varies by the class.

The Anthem Institute
