Build A Ccd Camera Enclosure

Measure the dimensions of your camera before picking out your PVC.

A CCD camera, though able to take beautiful video, can be damaged if it is used in harsh weather. If water reaches the circuitry within the camera body, it can short out the camera and render it worthless. The best way to avoid damage is to put the camera in an enclosure. Buying camera enclosures can be pricey, but you can build one yourself.

Instructions

1. Measure your camera and select PVC pipes and couplers that correspond in size to it. Ensure the diameter of the PVC pipe is wide enough to fit your camera's dimensions. Take your camera with you to the store when choosing your PVC.

2. Cut your PVC pipe so it is several inches longer and wider than your camera. This provides extra room for changing the camera settings when needed, and allows room for camera accessories.

3. Prepare one end of the cut PVC pipe for the PVC cement. Ensure it is free from moisture, dust and debris. Prepare the outer edge of the non-threaded coupler.

4. Apply the PVC cement on the prepared side of the cut PVC pipe. Apply the PVC cement to the outer edge of the non-threaded coupler. Place the coupler on the end of the cut PVC pipe and allow it to dry.

5. Place the non-threaded PVC coupler on top of the plexiglass. Draw a line on the plexiglass by tracing the edges of the coupler with the marker. This line should form a circle of the exact circumference of the coupler. Cut out the circle from the plexiglass.

6. Prepare the rim of the PVC coupler, and the edge of the plexiglass for the plastic cement. Apply the plastic cement to the outer edge and rim of the plexiglass. Apply the plexiglass to the rim of the coupler. Hold firm and allow to dry.

7. Prepare the other end of the cut PVC pipe and the inside of the threaded PVC coupler. Apply PVC cement to both prepared parts. Firmly hold them together until dry.

8. Locate the best place for the tripod bolt. Keep in mind the dimensions of your camera. Leave an inch or two in front and behind the camera. Mark your chosen location with your marker. Drill a hole the same diameter of your tripod bolt.

9. Place the washer and watertight rubber washer on the tripod bolt. Place the bolt through the hole in the PVC pipe. Add spacer washers as needed. Place your camera inside the PVC pipe and affix the tripod bolt to the mount on the camera. Screw the PVC end cap onto the threaded end of the coupler. Your camera enclosure is now complete.
