How Is Asbestos Testing Performed In Ct

Connecticut provides a strict framework for those capable of large-scale asbestos testing. The state follows federal guidelines in this regard and employs its own list of qualified inspectors that residents and businesses can access for testing, abatement and removal.

Accredited Laboratories

Connecticut adheres to federal standards regarding the accreditation of laboratories that test bulk quantities of asbestos, based on the Asbestos Emergency Hazard Response Act of 1986. As of 2010, the state of Connecticut recognized six such laboratories.

Training

The state refers prospective inspectors to state-recognized training programs or organizations. If an individual is subsequently licensed, he appears on a state roster of consultants and contractors that may be contacted in an asbestos-related situation. Contractors who do not appear on the list are not authorized or approved by the state to inspect, test or evaluate a site.

Types

The testing offered by Connecticut laboratories depends on the material or space under investigation. Labs use an array of testing models based on models used by specialists throughout other parts of the country. The testing method employed depends on whether carpeting, air-quality, schools, homes or more general building environments have come to the lab's attention.
