Government Grants For College For Minority Women

Government Grants for College for Minority Women

Women are graduating from college in higher numbers than ever before and are graduating in greater numbers than their male colleagues. They are also entering fields of study that were once dominated by men, like math and engineering. However, all of this costs money, and women-particularly minority women-still face great challenges when it comes to paying for education. Fortunately, many grants exist for minority women to fund their educations-including grants to study abroad-that have them specifically in mind.

Pell Grant

Minority women who come from low-income households qualify for this grant when they fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Awards average around $4,000. Additionally, qualification for this grant is a prerequisite for receiving some other types of government grants as well.

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

For the woman who is already receiving the Pell Grant, she should find out if she is also eligible for the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. It's open to people already receiving the Pell Grant and is determined by information the students provide on the FAFSA. Earmarked for financially underprivileged students, this grant provides recipients with an additional $200 to $4,000 a year.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Part of becoming educated in the 21st century includes becoming culturally educated. For women and minorities who wish to broaden their horizons by participating in an academic study abroad program, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program provides money to study abroad for either a semester or a full year. Special preference for the grant is given to students who come from traditionally under-represented groups, including minority and non-traditional women students.

To qualify, students must be receiving (or going to receive) the Pell grant during the time abroad, must be accepted into a qualified program, must be planning on spending at least 28 days in one country and must be studying in a country that isn't on the State Department's travel warning list.

Indian Graduate Student Scholarships

Women who belong to Federally Recognized Indian Tribes can apply for this grant if they have been admitted into a graduate program of study. They must also show that they have additional financial needs that have not yet been met.

The recipients must be at least one-fourth Indian by blood and have proof of being a member of a tribe that is eligible for programs spearheaded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the United States. Grants range from $200 to $4,000.
