Becoming an ultrasound technician involves studying sonography at the college level. There are multiple options for programs in Ohio that offer certificates in ultrasound technology, allowing you to work with ultrasound machines in the medical field. Certain programs will train for certain positions: You may want to work hands-on in a clinic, or you may want to advise and manage a team of ultrasound technicians.
Kettering College of Medical Arts
Located near the heart of Dayton, Ohio, the Kettering College of Medical Arts offers students the opportunity to earn a four-year degree in diagnostic medial sonography. This degree is flexible, allowing students to specialize their studies to abdominal, vascular or gynecological sonography, among others. The program ends with an externship during the fourth year, allowing students to gain real-world experience before venturing out into their careers.
The University of Rio Grande
Rio Grande is a small town, located near Ohio's border with West Virginia, whose university offers both a two-year and a four-year program in diagnostic medical sonography. The two-year program gives the option of specializing in cardiovascular sonography. Students can also continue their education in general sonography for the four-year degree.
Cincinnati State College
Located downtown, Cincinnati State offers two degrees in sonography: a two-year associate degree, and a one-year certificate. The certificate program is designed for students who have already graduated with a degree in a medical field -- it simply mirrors the last year of associate program. The associate program focuses on both general education and sonography, and includes real-life clinical experience at surrounding health and clinical facilities.
Central Ohio Technical College
About an hour outside of downtown Columbus, the small town of Newark is home to Central Ohio Technical College, which offers an associate of applied science degree in diagnostic medical sonography technology. There are two available majors within this degree: general and cardiovascular. Classes are structured into eight quarters, including both laboratory and classroom instruction. The program focuses on an all-around sonography education, preparing students to work directly with patients and machines, and also assisting doctors and nurses in making medical decisions
Cuyahoga Community College
"Tri-C," located in Cleveland, offers an associate of applied science degree program in sonography which allows students to select a specialization that suits their desires. Classes are complimented with real-world clinical experience and hands-on laboratory work. The two-year program prepares students for entry-level jobs in hospitals, clinics, and other health institutions. Night classes for required lectures are available, but can be limited.
