Radiologic technologists work with x-rays and other types of imaging.
Radiologic technologists work in hospitals or other medical facilities in a diagnostic capacity. They work under the supervision of doctors known as radiologists and use equipment to take pictures of the inside of the human body that are used to determine the cause of an illness or injury. Radiologic technologists are required to have a 2- or 4-year degree in radiography and must meet any state licensing requirements. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual earnings of radiologic technologists in the United States were $52,210 as of May, 2008.
Operating Equipment
Radiologic technologists use equipment like x-ray machines, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines and computerized tomography (CT) machines to make visual images of the inside of the human body. Once the images are recorded, the technologist develops the image much like the film in a camera so that the images can be viewed by physicians.
Safety
Since too much exposure to radiation can be dangerous, technologists must take precautions to ensure that neither they nor the patient is harmed. They must know the minimum amount of radiation that is required based on the area of the body that is being examined. Technologists also ensure that the patient is positioned properly.
Patient Comfort
It is beneficial for radiologists to have good people skills. Patients may be apprehensive about the procedure and may need reassurance, such as before entering the tubelike structure of the MRI machine. They also need to make patients as comfortable as possible in the event that the body must be placed in an awkward position to take the image.
Communication and Teammwork
Since the work of radiologic technologists is critical to the physician making the proper diagnosis, they bear the responsibility of communicating clearly so that they understand the physician's instructions. They also must be willing to function as part of a team and be able to work with other members of the staff.
Administrative/Upkeep
Technologists must keep accurate patient records and update patient charts. They also may be required to maintain equipment. Those in a supervisory capacity may perform tasks such as preparing work schedules and ordering equipment and supplies.
