Around 800,000 mechanics currently work in the automotive technology field and around 16 percent are self-employed. It is recommended that an employee has formal education, especially at the beginning of his career. Many colleges across the country offer various programs and some are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Lincoln College of Technology
Lincoln College of Technology has facilities in Florida, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana and Texas. The college offers diverse programs in the field of automotive technician training. Students take classes in Automotive Technology, Fuel and Emissions Systems, Electrical Systems, Drivability Diagnostics, Transmissions and Drive Lines. Lincoln College of Technology has provided education for over 60 years and cooperates with some car manufacturers for employment opportunities for the students.
Miami-Jacobs Career College
Another school that offers an Automotive Technician program is Miami-Jacobs College. The program emphasizes on electronic troubleshooting, technical skills of their students and engine performance. This program especially helps students in finding entry-level jobs. The College is present in five cities across Ohio.
Universal Technical College
UTI is has a nationwide network of colleges in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas. UTI provides education for automotive, diesel, collision repair and motorcycle technicians. The program usually lasts for year and a half and offers student training on such vehicles as BMW, Ford, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. In cooperation with NASCAR, UTI has a 48-week core program that teaches about Automotive Technology with NASCAR engine racing components.
Westwood College
Westwood College offers a 20-month associate degree in Automotive Technology. The program focuses on fundamental automotive repairs and working in a lab with testing equipment, handheld scanners and other diagnostic tools. The program has been evaluated by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation and meets Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) standards. Students who finish this degree at Westwood College in any of six federal states or on-line, pursue their career as parts sales manager, automotive technician or fleet mechanic.
