Hospital patient transporters
are a central part of a hospital's healthcare system. Transporters may be responsible for transporting services, collecting services, greeting services and mailing services. Entry-level patient transporters begin at a lower salaries and may seek higher salaries as patient transporting supervisors.
General Duties
Hospital patient transporters may be responsible for taking patients to and from hospital medical areas. Some transport areas include the laboratory department, operating department and patient hospital rooms.
Special Transporting Duties
Patient transportation may involve high-risk patients such as a respiratory patient who made need extra care with an oxygen tank. A patient transporter is responsible for ensuring that patients arrive without transport complications.
Collecting Duties
Patient transporters may also collect laboratory specimens. These specimens may be analyzed by lab technicians to help physicians confirm medical conditions. Patient transporters may also transport equipment such as stretchers and wheelchairs.
Less Common Duties
Greeting duties may be assigned at smaller hospitals during the late evening. Mailing duties may be given to transport inter-office mail between hospital floors.
Training and Salaries for Patient Transporters
Hospitals may request minimal work experience of six months' work experience with good interpersonal skills, communications skills and physical stamina. Hourly rates may range from $9 with less than one year of experience to $14 or more for 10 years of experience. Salaries differ based on geographic location, previous patient transporter experience and hospital size.
