Medicare Part D & Social Security Disability Benefits

Medicare Part D pays for prescription medication.

After someone qualifies for Social Security disability benefits for two years, he also qualifies for Medicare. Medicare helps to pay for many health care services, including inpatient care, outpatient care and prescription medications.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D pays for prescription drugs. Medicare recipients must pay a monthly premium for Part D, but disabled people with low incomes may qualify for assistance with their premiums.

How It Works

Medicare recipients select a prescription drug plan. They receive an insurance card in the mail. The card for Part D differs from their regular Medicare card. They present the card when purchasing prescriptions at a pharmacy. They may have a small co-pay for prescriptions.

Other Benefits

Many disabled people live on relatively low incomes, so they may also qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid pays for some medical services not covered by Medicare. It may pay for drugs not covered by Medicare Part D and may cover any co-pays for drugs.
