Mammographers may choose to earn additional certification in breast sonography.
Radiologic technologists use imaging technology to check for any medical abnormalities inside the body. Some radiologic technologists specialize in digital mammography, which focuses on the breast area. Most states require these technologists---including mammographers---to be licensed. States may also require certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Education
Those interested in mammography must first complete educational training in the field of radiography. While students can enroll at a variety of degree levels, most radiologic technologists earn an associate's degree from community college. They take classes in anatomy, imaging technology and medical terminology, among other science courses. Some schools may offer concentrations or certificates in mammography in addition to the radiography program. Whatever educational path they choose, students must complete accredited formal training in order to qualify for the ARRT certification exam.
ARRT Radiography Certification
Mammographers need to earn primary certification in radiography before sitting for the mammography exam. Applicants must have completed an accredited education program within the last five years. They will need to include copies of their transcripts with their ARRT certification application. In addition, they must report any present misdemeanor or felony charges or prior convictions as part of the ARRT's ethics requirement.
Technologists must maintain their certification in radiography before they will be permitted to sit for the mammography examination. They will have to earn 24 credits of continuing education every two years in order to keep their certification current.
Mammography Clinical Experience
Significant clinical experience in digital mammography is required for technologists who plan to earn certification in this subfield. They must observe at least 20 mammography exams and perform mammograms on a minimum of 75 patients within the two years prior to applying for ARRT certification. Candidates need to have experience in a variety of procedures, including breast implant imaging, ductography, breast MRIs and needle localization, according to the ARRT's certification regulations. The candidate must maintain written documentation of clinical experience with these procedures and must have a supervisor sign the records for verification. Although these documents are not required for application submission, the ARRT may ask to see them at a later date.
