Histology technicians are individuals who perform specific tests and observe specimens to identify changes in organs or tissues by freezing and staining specimens so that pathologists can discuss the proper procedures with surgeons regarding a patient's surgery. To become a histology technician, an individual will have to obtain an associate's degree of applied science. The two-year program will help prospective technicians understand the basic concepts of histology through several lectures and courses as well as gaining hands-on experience in a histology lab. After completing the program, graduates are eligible to take the certification exam to obtain a license as a histology technician.
Prerequisites
There are several courses histology majors can take while they are in the program or before enrolling in the program. College algebra will give students skills in learning quadratic equations and exponents, while general biology provides discussions in biological chemistry and genetics. General chemistry focuses on chemical reactions, atomic structure and solutions properties, and composition I helps students improve their writing skills by learning the basics in argumentation, critical analysis and using the proper sources in essay citations and references.
Introduction to Histology
The Introduction to Histology course will give students a descriptive view of the health-care industry as well as teaching them the basics of histology in the lab. Students will also learn be a health-care professional, medical terminology, applying math to lab work, legal procedures, effective communication, and proper safety measures while working in the lab.
Functional Histology I and II
Functional Histology I will teach students recognize specific cells in the human body as well as how they function. The course will also give students the basic understanding of identify different blood and tissue types. While Functional Histology I describes the functions of specific cells, Functional Histology II goes into the organ system, as it details the various functions as well as introduces students to the central nervous system, reproductive organs, circulatory system,and endocrine glands.
Histotechnology I and II
Histotechnology I introduces students to the basics in histotechnology. The course overview consists of processing body tissue, lab safety and staining. Histechnology II emphasizes the basics of histochemical staining procedures. The course will include topics in lab safety, dyeing and bonding body tissue, applying math to lab procedures, and studying carbohydrate staining techniques.
Histotechnology Clinical
Histotechnology Clinical is a semester-based course that gives students the opportunity to apply the skills they learned through the histology program in a histology environment through the supervision of a clinical instructor.
Registry Review
This course prepares students to obtain their license as a histology technician by understanding the major procedures in the histotechnology field. Students will have to perform several procedures, including processing exclusive stains and indentifying tissues. Students will also get an overview of business etiquette and the proper legal and ethical behavior.
