Gynecological Exam Procedures

According to the University of California, women should go to the gynecologist yearly after age 21. Going to the gynecologist is packed with mystery, misinformation and fear. Knowing what to expect makes the experience less uncomfortable.


Interview


Each visit begins with an interview during which the doctor learns about your sexual, menstrual and health history and answers any questions you have.


External Exam


The doctor will perform an external exam to make sure the outer genitalia are free from infection, lesions, warts or other abnormalities. The doctor will look at the labia, mons pubis and anus.


Internal Speculum Exam


Next, the doctor will insert a speculum, which is a medical device that allows her to see inside of the vagina. She will examine the vaginal canal and cervix for abnormalities.


Pap Smear and STD Testing


The doctor will collect samples of tissue and fluid from the cervix. These samples will be sent t a lab and tested for abnormalities, HPV and other sexually transmitted diseases.


Bimanual Exam


The doctor will use her fingers and hands both inside and outside of the vagina to feel for and examine the ovaries and other reproductive organs.


Breast Exam


The doctor will check the tissue of both breasts, the chest wall and the underarms for lumps and tissue abnormalities.
