Medical resonance imaging (MRI) and sonogram technicians are responsible for capturing images within the human body. These images are used to help doctors and physicians diagnose various medical ailments. Technicians must also prepare patients for this procedure by having them lie in the proper position and setting the equipment up in the correct location. 1. Graduate with an associate's degree in radiologic technology. An associate's degree offers a curriculum in radiographic procedures, medical terminology, anatomy, patient care, human biology, radiation physics and pathology. Students can also continue their education with a bachelor degree program. Graduating with a bachelor's degree may open promotional and salary opportunities.
2. Participate in an internship. An internship allows students to work in a professional setting and gives them an opportunity to work with patients and learn under a supervised MRI or sonogram technician. Internships also give students an opportunity to begin gaining clinical experience, which may be a required part of a degree program.
3. Acquire a license radiologic technology. Most U.S. states require that technicians be licensed. While requirements vary by state, most applicants must pass an exam to gain licensure.
4. Obtain certification through the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technicians (ARMRIT). Though certification isn't required, becoming certified proves to potential employers that an applicant has the knowledge and skills needed to work in this field. To become certified, prospective technicians must pass an exam and complete continuing education courses every two years to remain certified.
5. Look for employment opportunities in hospitals, clinics or private practices. While many potential employers may post career opportunities online, applicants should also contact the human resources department within medical facilities to find openings.
