An ultrasound technician uses high-frequency sound waves to create visual images of interior bodily areas. Physicians use these images to diagnose illnesses and injuries, and to assess the health of unborn babies. Ultrasound technology is increasingly implemented instead of radiology procedures, such as X-rays, because of the lower radiation levels and better image detail.
Communication With Patients
An ultrasound technician interviews the patient and records medical history, then explains the ultrasound method and answers any questions.
Procedure
After directing and moving the individual into the best position for scanning, the ultrasound technician uses a transducer to send sound waves through the body, which create echoes by bouncing off designated organs and other body parts. The echoes are captured by special equipment and turned into images.
Summaries of Findings
Along with the images, ultrasound technicians include a recorded oral summary or a written summary of the technical findings for the physician.

Considerations
Ultrasound technicians must be able to work with complex diagnostic equipment, and to have enough strength to lift and position patients. They also must be able to communicate well with patients, and have excellent vision and attention to detail.
