X-ray techs, or technicians, are health care workers who administer and develop diagnostic tests that utilize radiation, including X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and mammograms. X-ray techs can work in a variety of settings.
Hospitals
The most common place for X-ray technicians to work is hospitals. X-ray techs may work at general facilities or hospitals that specialize in a particular type of care, such as pediatric, oncology, geriatric or women.
Physicians Offices
Some physicians offer X-ray services in their offices, which are implemented by X-ray technicians. This is especially true of orthopedic specialists, rheumatologists and cardiopulmonary physicians.
Medical and Diagnostic Laboratories
X-ray technicians who work in medical and diagnostic laboratories do not typically administer procedures; instead, they are responsible for developing the films and reports created during radiologic procedures.
Outpatient Care Centers
X-ray technicians may administer tests at a facility that is designed for outpatient care. At such places, patients arrive with prescriptions for specific tests from medical providers and leave after their tests have been completed.
Clinics
X-ray technicians may work at public health clinics that provide free or inexpensive treatment for low-income individuals. They may also work at clinics offered by colleges and universities for their students.
Armed Forces
X-ray technicians who are enlisted in a branch of the armed forces or those that have been hired for civilian work by a branch administer develop the results of diagnostic tests in health facilities located on military bases.
