What Is Individual Augmentation

Individual augmentation is a military term used for sailors who leave their assigned ships or squadrons and are reassigned for a special mission with a small group or individually. Those so selected are commonly known as an individual augmentee.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for individual augmentation vary from order to order, but each prerequisite must be met before deployment. Examples of prerequisites are getting a government travel card and security clearance.

Mission

Individual augmentation orders may describe the mission in two or three descriptive words. However, most orders are for secret missions meant only for the selected few and the full extent of the mission will not be revealed until the mission is set to begin.

Alternates

Alternates are soldiers or sailors selected to complete a mission if the primary person cannot complete the mission. There are two types of alternates: non-embedded and embedded. Non-embedded alternates do not receive training prior to deployment, while embedded alternates do.

Completion

Once an individual augmentation mission is completed, the individual augmentee goes back to his regularly assigned squadron. However, sometimes he will be sent on a back-to-back mission.
