Health Insurance Requirements For Employers In Pennsylvania

Health insurance provides coverage in the case of traumatic injury

The state of Pennsylvania has no requirement for employers to pay any portion of health insurance premiums for workers. Many businesses choose to pay a portion of premiums so as to allow a lower cost of insurance for workers and provide incentive for new employees to apply for a position with the company.

Consistent Requirements

Employers in the state of Pennsylvania are not required to offer health insurance to workers. When an employer chooses to offer benefits to his employees, however, he must be consistent as to the requirements to qualify for benefits such as 90 days of continuous employment. He may not use discriminatory criteria for coverage eligibility such as age, race, gender, country of origin and others. Any employer that conducts discriminatory practices with regard to health care coverage may be subject to penalties, both civil and criminal.

Child Coverages

According to the website for the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance, employers are not required to offer insurance to children as part of health care coverage. Employers that choose to offer coverage to children as part of health insurance plans must extend options for all children up to age 29 as long as the child is not married, has no dependents, is a full-time resident of the state or a full-time college student and is not eligible for any other health care coverage in the state.

Single Coverage Plans

An employer is not required to purchase a group plan for his employees and may instead opt for single coverage plans. The employer does not have to contribute any funds to paym for insurance premiums, meaning you'll be footing the bill for your health care coverage with the employer acting as a go-between for you and the insurance company. In the event of single coverage, you may be eligible for the Health Coverage Tax Credit which offers a deduction of 65 percent of the premium amount paid to the insurance company.
