Protect The Rights Of Women In Prison

Women prisoners are guaranteed certain rights according to the government that incarcerates them and according to world bodies such as the United Nations. Frequently, the rights of women in prison get overlooked and sometimes even trampled on. To help protect the rights of women in prison follow these steps.

Instructions

1. Protect women's most basic rights. The most basic women's rights are the ones that are most egregiously abused in prison. A woman's rights to the integrity of her body and to be free from abuse gets violated at a shocking rate. Amnesty International is one of the organizations that spearheads the fight to protect these rights. Join with Amnesty by volunteering to help protect the rights of women in prison.

2. Make sure women can communicate with others. In the U.S., women are guaranteed the right to communicate with and receive visits from people on the outside. They have a right during these communications to speak freely. Make sure that women are receiving protection for this right since communication is the first step to further protections.

3. Help to organize within a prison. If there are widespread or even just multiple reports of rights abuse in a women's prison system, getting the women to organize will help to protect their rights. Prisoners are entitled to sue the correctional facility or system that is abusing their rights. If you know of something going on, find a lawyer and organize a class action suit in order to protect these rights of the women prisoners.

4. Make sure the women receive medical treatment. One of the most basic rights of women prisoner is to receive adequate and timely medical treatment from trained professionals. You can partner with organizations such as the Legal Services for Prisoners with Children or you can go to the media with reports of medical neglect to help protect women's medical rights in prison.
