Marietta was a major center for riverboat manufacturing in the 19th century.
Marietta is a city of 14,000 people (2007 figures), located where the Muskingum River joins the Ohio River. Marietta is the seat of Washington County, an area first surveyed by a young George Washington during the colonial era. Today it is a prosperous community with a balance of local industry and tourism.
History
Marietta is justly proud of its history. It was founded in 1788 as the first permanent settlement in what was then the Northwest Territory. The founders, largely veterans of the Revolutionary War, named the town after Marie Antoinette in recognition of the support they'd received from the French. The early settlers were impressed by the remains of prehistoric earthworks built by the native Adena and Hopewell cultures, and --- unusually, for the day --- protected them as public spaces. During the 19th century the town was a major center for riverboat construction and oil production, which left a heritage of stately homes and public buildings.
Marietta College
Marietta College was founded as the Muskingum Academy in 1797, and was established in its current form in 1835. The school offers a combination of liberal arts and technical courses, with graduate and undergraduate degrees available in a variety of disciplines. Programs include broadcasting, communications, journalism and information systems. There is also a program in petroleum engineering, a reminder of the town's history.
Washington State Community College
Washington State Community College offers majors in various disciplines within the categories of arts and sciences, business technologies, health sciences, engineering and industrial technologies and public services. Courses include accounting, health and wellness technology, criminal justice, agribusiness management and a variety of computer-related subjects. In addition to its degree programs, the college offers certificates in a variety of disciplines.
The Career Center Adult Technical Training
The Career Center Adult Technical Training is a school geared to practical instruction in a handful of specialized fields. Courses are available for a variety of construction and industrial trades, a half-dozen medical specialties and a number of recognized computer industry certifications. The CCATT also offers customized training to clients in a variety of industries.
