Pregnancy & Breast Implants

Breast implants have gained prominence over the last 30 years. During this time, surgeons have developed safer breast implants that do not cause long-term health problems. Despite the increased safety, many women worry whether breast implants will affect their pregnancy.

Risk

Breast implants do not have any significant impact on pregnancy. The baby is not affected by the implant and the pregnancy should go smoothly.

Size and Shape

Pregnancy can change the shape of breasts, stretching them and causing them to lose the aesthetic beauty that was created by the augmentation surgery. Women with extremely large breast implants generally experience an increase in size during pregnancy.

Pain

Breasts become very tender during pregnancy and breast implants can cause greater sensitivity. In some instances, the tenderness can lead to severe breast pains.

Breastfeeding

In instances where the breast implant is not placed under the breast muscle, the mother is prevented from breastfeeding her child altogether. Otherwise, breast implants should not prevent breastfeeding.

Adjustment

After pregnancy, breast implants may need readjusting to restore their shape and size. If you plan on having more children, it is recommended that you wait until after their births to prevent repeating augmentation surgery multiple times.
