Intervention Specialist Certifications

Drug addiction rips families and sufferers apart.


Interventions are commonly used by friends and family of people suffering from addiction to alcohol or drugs. The intervention helps the sufferer realize they need medical attention. Other forms of intervention include disease intervention, early childhood intervention and domestic violence intervention. Certified intervention specialists are trained to address the specific issues in one form of intervention. Certification courses provide intervention specialists with the knowledge and specific skills necessary to affect change.


Addiction Intervention Specialist


Certification is available for specialties in drug and alcohol intervention. Drug and alcohol addiction can cause sufferers to ruin their finances, friends and family relationships. For many, an addiction can spiral out of control if the sufferer does not seek immediate medical attention on their own. Drug and alcohol intervention specialists help families encourage their loved ones to seek medical attention to treat the addiction. The specialist will be trained in multiple intervention methods, such as the 'Johnson method' that asks people suffering from addiction to consider how their addiction has led to specific destructive behaviors.


Early Childhood Intervention Specialist


Certifications are also offered for special education teachers wishing to specialize in early childhood intervention. Early childhood intervention is for children who have need for intensive, specialized instruction. This certification includes courses in assessing the child's needs, using technology to adapt or augment the child's ability to communicate and establish relationships with parents of children with special needs.


Disease Intervention Specialist


Disease intervention specialists work with individuals who have contracted sexually transmitted diseases. The specialist must help the patient come to terms with changes in sexual behavior to prevent spread of the disease. Some states require disease intervention specialists to obtain certification in phlebotomy or venipuncture if they will be withdrawing blood for testing.


Gender Violence Intervention Specialist


A gender violence intervention specialists works with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Programs in this certification field offer training in communication with victims of different cultures, lessons on the history and prevention of sexual and domestic violence. Gender violence specialists must encourage victims to leave dangerous situations and to seek psychological care for emotional recovery.
