Criminal Justice Schools In Southern California

Criminal justice is a career-oriented educational specialty which prepares the student for employment or advancement within one of several professions based around upholding the law. These professions include corrections, law enforcement, homeland security, forensics and other related careers. Some such professions require a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, while others are better served by an accelerated training program directed at helping the student pass an examination, such as a police officer training program.

California State University Bakersfield offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice. The school's stated goals for the program are to teach the student critical thinking, oral communication, written communication, crime theory, law and society, an understanding of crime and punishment, and research and statistical skills. The school's criminal justice department offers internship placements with a variety of public and private agencies, including police departments, sheriff's offices, district attorneys, correctional facilities and law firms.

Golden West College


Part of the California Community College system, Golden West College was founded in 1965, and it sits on 120 acres in Huntington Beach. This two-year college specializes in associate degrees and serves about 13,000 students annually.


Golden West's Criminal Justice Training Center, a Regional Law Enforcement Training Facility, offers three independent programs designed specifically to meet state certification standards for police officers, as set by the State Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training. These programs include such subjects as live-scan fingerprinting, background investigations, physical agility, oral interviewing, police report writing, juvenile law, forensic photography and more. Upon completion of studies and certification, students should be prepared to undergo the official police academy testing.
