Types Of Postural Xrays

A postural X-ray allows the spine to be seen from all sides.

Postural X-rays are taken while the patient is standing up, to show how the body reacts to gravity. Postural X-rays show true spinal deviation and postural problems, and allow the spinal column to be seen from all sides. Postural X-rays are mainly to diagnose Scheuermann's Kyphosis, a condition in which the back has a severe rounding or there is wedging of a vertebra.

Postural Kyphosis X-Ray

Kyphosis is a condition in which the back has a rounded curve. It is most common in teenagers. If a child shows signs of this condition a postural X-ray of the complete spine, from the shoulders to the pelvic area, is taken. The extent of the Kyphosis can be measured in degrees.

Postural Scoliosis X-Ray

Scoliosis is a curve in the spine resulting from malformation of the vertebral elements. Postural X-rays are taken to view the entire spinal column to determine the severity of the malformation. It also helps predict whether the curve will get worse over time. Treatment options vary, from bracing to surgery.

Postural Spine X-Rays

Many people have joint and muscle pain. The spine houses the body's central nervous system. The central nervous system is responsible for sending messages from the brain to the rest of the body. A postural spinal X-ray may be taken to diagnose different serious illnesses, not only those in the back.
