Become An Ekg Technician Online

EKG technicians assist with stress tests.

There are several online schools that offer EKG technician diplomas. The EKG technician performs electrocardiogram exams on adult, pediatric and infant patients mainly in hospitals and medical offices. This exam shows electrical impulses of the heart that can determine abnormal rhythms and other electrical abnormalities useful in the diagnosis of various diseases. Electrodes are placed on the patient's chest and limbs, patient data is typed into the EKG machine and a 12-lead EKG and rhythm strip are printed out and prepared for interpretation by the EKG reading doctor. Other tests performed by the EKG technician are treadmill stress tests providing baseline, exercise and post-exercise electrocardiograms and 24-hour EKG monitors placed on the patient--after removal--a report is created by the EKG technician for physician interpretation

Instructions

1. Research and compare online schools that offer an electrocardiograph technician diploma. Make sure each school is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals; this is widely accepted by the healthcare industry. Find a school that provides the curriculum for a diploma or type of degree you are interested in acquiring. Online education should include lectures, discussion threads, video library, instructor one-on-one conferences, online assignments and exams.

2. Request information packets for EKG technician online courses that include enrollment applications and financial aid services from one or more of the schools you are interested in. Check out their credibility and history, make sure all of your questions are answered before applying for your self-paced study program.

3. Receive your diploma after successfully completing the EKG technician online courses. You are now eligible to take one of three available certification exams: National Certified ECG Technician (NCET), National Certified title of EKG Technician (NRCEKG) or Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT).

4. Find an entry-level position as an EKG technician at a hospital, clinic, doctor's office, nursing home or healthcare agency. Employers are more willing to hire an individual with an EKG technician certification and a diploma from an accredited online school.
