Side Effects After Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is commonly done to make the breasts smaller, lighter and more aesthetically pleasing. For many women with larger breasts, problems such as back pain and shoulder pain are common. The Cleveland Clinic suggests that most of the women that decide to undergo breast reduction surgery find relief from chronic neck pain as well as gaining a feeling of having breasts that are more proportionate to their physical size. According to the Cleveland Clinic, breast reduction surgery is available for men as well as women.

Initial Side Effects

The Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery reminds us that a breast reduction surgery has the potential for the same side effects as any other kind of surgery. These immediate side effects include an infection from the procedure that would need further treatment, bleeding from the incision that would need to be redone or possibly internal bleeding from a blood vessel that was ruptured during the procedure and a negative response to the anesthetic that could include nausea and vomiting. The Cleveland Clinic recommends taking at least one week off of school or work immediately following a breast reduction surgery, and this period may be longer if any of the aforementioned side effects occur. DocShop.com indicates that a special therapeutic bra will need to be worn for at least two weeks after the surgery.

Sensation in the Breast

According to DocShop.com, pain is a normal side effect after a breast reduction surgery. Jolts to the body such as sneezing or sudden stops while walking can make the pain seem worse. The Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery points out that breast reduction surgery could damage nerves in the breasts, or it could cut off part of the blood supply to the breasts as well. If this occurs, then some of the side effects that could be experienced include a loss of sensation in the nipple, the nipple may become hypersensitive and anything that touches it causes a painful sensation or the breast and nipple may simply loss partial sensitivity. In some cases this change or loss of sensitivity in the breast or nipple is temporary only lasting two or three weeks. However, it is possible that these changes in breast sensation could become permanent.

Incision Side Effects

Some of the side effects associated with breast reduction surgery occur around the area of the incision. You may experience some deep and dark-colored bruising that will eventually go away. The incision area may become uncomfortable and cause you to itch the area for a week or two. The skin around the incision may also begin to swell, and it could possibly become dry and scaly. If any of these side effects occur, contact your doctor for temporary relief through prescription medication. Also contact your doctor if you experience fever or a discharge from the incision area. In some cases, the incision may have to be repaired using a skin graft, and in these cases it is possible that permanent scarring could occur.
