Echocardiology Sonography Schools

Echo cardiac sonographers identify heart abnormalities.


Echo cardiac sonographers develop images called echocardiograms with the use of ultrasound technology. These images are used to identify any abnormalities in the heart's chambers, vessels or valves. Echo cardiac sonographers work in clinical settings such as hospitals and diagnostic clinics. This position requires an associate's degree and state certification, offered by community colleges, technical colleges and universities across the country.

As part of the Dallas County Community College District in Texas, El Centro College is a multiple campus community college offering associate's degrees in business, information technology, culinary arts and allied health. El Centro's Division of Health and Legal Studies offers programs in 18 areas, including echocardiology Technology, diagnostic medical sonography and pediatric echocardiology. These programs are referred to as Specialized Imaging Programs, which consist of 34 credits derived from lectures and labs. The Echocardiology Technology and Pediatric Echocardiology Technology programs incorporate up-to-date ultrasound equipment and prepare students to complete the Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) board examination or the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) board examination.

Grand Valley State University


Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Allendale, Michigan is a public four-year university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in over 200 areas of study. The Radiologic and Imaging Sciences (RIS) program within the GVSU College of Health Professions offers bachelor's degrees in radiologic and imaging sciences, radiation therapy and diagnostic medical sonography. The diagnostic medical sonography major includes a concentration option in echocardiography. The concentration also includes a specialty area in adult echocardiography and either vascular sonography or pediatric echocardiography. The program is composed of 138 credits of coursework and clinical lab practice.

Montgomery College


Montgomery College (MC) is a two-year, certificate- and degree-granting institution with three campuses in Maryland. MC offers programs in more than 100 areas of study and serves over 60,000 annually. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program awards a certificate or A.A.S. (associate of applied science) degree in the field. The A.A.S. program prepares students for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers exam. The program offers three track options in general sonography, vascular sonography or echocardiology sonography. The echo cardiology track is a total of 66 credits and includes coursework in pediatric and adult care. These three tracks are also available with the certificate program, however students are not eligible for the national exam.
