Alabama State Health Insurance Regulations

Heath insurance programs are regulated by a combination of mandates or laws by state and federal government. Alabama is one of many states that has its own set of programs and regulations for health insurance. The state has many programs that are mandated by state law that are available to provide health insurance coverage to children and low-income families. A health insurance continuation law also offers benefits that exceed federal laws such as HIPAA.


All Kids Program


The Alabama All Kids Program is a health insurance program for kids that is provided by the Alabama Department of Health. The program is available for children who are under the age of 19. It is designed to help families who cannot qualify for Medicaid. Benefits of the program include well-child check-ups, sick child doctor visits, immunizations as well as coverage for dental, vision care, prescriptions and hospitalization.


Public Education Employees' Health Insurance Plan


The State Education Employees' Health Insurance Plan or (PEEHIP) provides health insurance benefits to active and retired employees in the field of education. Full and part-time employees are included in the program as well as dependents of an institute of public education within the state of Alabama. A member who qualifies for the program will receive a reduced cost for HMO, medical as well as any hospital premiums.


State Employees' Children's Health Insurance Plan


The State Employees' Children's Health Insurance Plan or SECHIP is a health insurance plan designed for low income employees and retirees of the state. Eligibility for the program includes being under the age of 19, is ineligible for coverage under Medicaid and is not currently covered by another health insurance plan. Benefits include inpatient and outpatient hospital services as well as prescription, dental and a discounted vision care program.


SOBRA Medicaid


SOBRA Medicaid is a health care program that helps to pay medical bills for health coverage. The program provides health care coverage for women who are pregnant and children under the age of 19. An individual must meet certain income guidelines and be a resident of the state of Alabama to be eligible for the program. A birth control service is also available for women who are between the ages of 19 and 44.


Alabama Health Insurance Plan


The Alabama Health Insurance Plan or AHIP is designed for individuals who are not eligible for group health insurance coverage, Medicare, Medicaid or any other type of group health insurance plan. AHIP is a state law that meets the standards of the federal law known as HIPAA or the Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act. The law provides for health insurance coverage for anyone who had previous coverage under a group health insurance plan.
