Students wishing to attend college in North Carolina have many choices. Including private, community and public colleges, the number of institutions of higher learning in the state reaches over 175. Whatever your choice for higher learning, North Carolina provides you many options.


Significance


One of the best-known colleges in North Carolina is probably Duke University, a private school with several well-known schools and colleges including a school of law.


History


The oldest public university in the state is The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which has been accepting students since 1795 while the oldest private university, Salem College, opened its doors in 1772.


Community colleges


North Carolina contains over 50 community colleges spread throughout the state from Durham and Fayetteville Technical Colleges to Richmond and Wilkes Community Colleges.


Private colleges


Approximately 50 private colleges call North Carolina home including The Art Institute of Charlotte, Carolina Bible College, Duke University, North Carolina Wesleyan College and Wake Forest University.


Public colleges


Public colleges and universities number approximately 16 and include Appalachian State, Fayetteville State, North Carolina State University, The University of North Carolina and Winston-Salem State University.
