Alternatives To Screen Printing

Create embellished T-shirts with screen printing alternatives

Screen printing is often used for printing on T-shirts and other fabric items with high-quality results. Because the setup is time consuming and requires special equipment, especially when multiple colors are printed, screen printing is best for high volume jobs. For printing smaller quantities or do-it-yourself projects that don't require screen preparation, there are several alternatives.

Digital Printing

Digital printing requires little setup. It's a popular choice for small runs of T-shirts or for designing a single item. Items can be printed one at a time when ordered, so an item can be sold without upfront cost to the designer. There are many companies online, such a Threadless, CafePress and Zazzle that allow you to upload designs for individual purchase, or to make available in your own online shop.

Iron-On Transfer

Iron-on transfer sheets that run through standard printers can be purchased at computer supply and craft stores. Design the image on your computer and print it out on the transfer paper, then iron on.

Stencil

Make a stencil out of thin cardboard or plastic to create identical images on multiple pieces. Use spray paint, which will not wash off fabric, to create a stenciled image.
