Bioflavonoids Warnings & Side Effects

Bioflavonoids are substances primarily found in fruits and citrus rinds. Citrus bioflavonoid supplements are available in health food stores, and are claimed to have many health benefits. Side effects are rare.

Benefits

Bioflavonoids have antioxidant properties and may enhance the action of vitamin C, improve circulation and eyesight, and relieve symptoms of inflammatory conditions, allergies and arthritis.

Dosage

Bioflavonoid supplements are available in capsules of 250 mg, with a recommended dosage of one capsule every 12 or 8 hours.

Side Effect

The only reported side effect associated with bioflavonoid supplements is an allergic reaction. Signs include hives, difficulty breathing, and facial, mouth and throat swelling.

Caution

Research is scant on the long-term benefits and side effects of citrus bioflavonoid supplements, according to physician and nutritional supplement expert Ray Sahelian. He advises skipping the supplement a day or two each week and also skipping a week every two or three months.

Considerations

Customers should only purchase bioflavonoid supplements from a reputable manufacturer, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate dietary supplements as closely as it does drugs.
