Cancer Awareness Day Activities

It is important that people be made aware of the factors causing cancer.

Cancer affects millions of people either directly or indirectly. Select from numerous activities when planning an event to help promote cancer awareness and prevention in your community. Affiliate with an organization like the American Cancer Society to generate local support for your activity.

A Walk-A-Thon

Plan a walk-a-thon to raise money and promote awareness of cancer in general, or a particular form of cancer. Create a banner and other promotional materials to draw attention to your event. Name your campaign and include it on your promotional materials. For example, "Racing for a Cure to Pancreatic Cancer." Place promotional posters on public bulletin boards like libraries, schools, government agencies/services bulletin boards as well as private bulletin boards such as those in retail stores. Always ask permission to add your poster/bulletin to a bulletin board, either public or private.

Concert for a Cure

Plan a concert in a local venue, be it a restaurant, civic center or a local park, and invite performers to volunteer their talents to your event. During breaks between performances, ask speakers to share personal stories about how cancer has effected their life or the life of a love one. If your budget permits, rent equipment so that you can include informational videos as well as tribute videos for your audience.

Enlist community volunteers to help organize and promote your concert. Check with local businesses to determine if they can donate supplies/equipment to your event or if you can place a poster for your event on their premises. Businesses will often agree, in part, to help promote their business to the community.

Informational Booth

Open an informational booth at a local mall, or other venue, where volunteers distribute literature on cancer prevention, treatment and research. Contact nonprofit organizations, like the American Cancer Society, that are devoted to finding a cure for cancer. Request materials such as brochures--perhaps in the form of a downloadable PDF--you can reproduce in volume and distribute through your booth. If you choose to create your own literature, design professional looking brochures in a graphics program like Photoshop, or for a freeware alternative, GIMP. Make sure to rely on credible sources and to include those sources in small print on all materials you distribute to the public.
