4 Causes Of Stress

Stress often causes headaches.

Stress has in impact on all aspects of a person's life and manifests in a variety of symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms of stress include physical symptoms such as headaches, high blood pressure and trouble sleeping; and mental and emotional health symptoms including anger, depression, difficulty focusing and behavioral changes. There are many different causes of stress, and knowing what causes it is helpful when trying to manage stress.

Internal Thoughts

A person's own thoughts and feelings cause internal stress, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fears or phobias including stressors such as a fear of enclosed spaces, insects or getting lost, often trigger internal stress. Uncertainty, such as thinking about pending test results or meeting a new person for the first time, is another cause of internal stress. Personal beliefs and expectations also cause internal stress in situations such as future career planning and holiday events.

Family and Friends

Family and friends often unintentionally create stressful situations, notes the Mayo Clinic. Having a fight with a family member, a family gathering with judgmental in-laws and relatives, dealing with a sullen teen or an upset child are just some of the ways that family members create stress. Friends who stop by unannounced or are unsupportive or even those who are going though a difficult time often create stressful situations. For children, friends who tease or bully them may increase feelings of stress as well.

Life Changes

Dealing with monumental life events, both positive and negative, often leads to feelings of stress, according to the Mayo Clinic. Getting married, getting pregnant, moving to a new house, getting a new pet or receiving a promotion are all exciting and often joyous events, but often create stress as they are all significant life changes that require adjustment and adaptation. Other less positive life changes such as the death of a family member or friend, losing a job or getting divorced often evoke feelings of stress as well.

Work or School

Work provides many daily opportunities for stress to appear. Situations such as a difficult workload, challenging presentation, pressing deadlines, unhelpful coworkers or an unforgiving boss are all common workplace stressors, according to the Mayo Clinic. For children and adults attending school, stress often appears as a result of a challenging course or test, dealing with peers, handling a difficult teacher and organizing time to get assignments completed. In addition, according to the KidsHealth website, separation anxiety is a common school-related stressor for young children leaving home for the first time.
