The pink ribbon is a symbol used for breast cancer awareness.
The Susan G. Komen foundation was formed in 1982. It was formed in memory of Susan, by her sister Nancy G. Brinker with a focus on ending breast cancer forever. As of 2011, the foundation has raised more than $1.9 billion to fight the disease. There are several different methods of donating to the foundation. All of which are tax deductible, at the end of the calendar year. Additionally, the foundation holds races around the country where participants raise money from sponsors in their "Race for a Cure."
Instructions
Online Donation
1. Go to the official website of the Susan G. Komen foundation at Komen.org.
2. Place your cursor under the heading "Get Involved." Several options appear in a drop-down menu. Select "Donate."
3. Scroll toward the bottom of the page and click "Donation." This page is titled Get Involved. Donate Now! It lists several facts about breast cancer and invites you to make your donation -- toward the bottom of the page.
4. Select "Donate Online." There are several different options. Donate online is the first option to the left.
5. Select how you would like to donate. There are several options such as a general donation, where you donate money from yourself, honor donation, where you make a donation in honor of someone else who is battling breast cancer or memorial donation, where you make a donation in the same of someone who has died from the disease.
6. Fill out your billing and credit card information to complete your donation. Items like your name, address, email, amount you wish to donate and your credit card name, number and security code are requested. Select "Next Step" to review and complete your donation.
Text Donation
7. Text the word "Komen" to 90999. Each text donation has a value of $10. Up to 5 donations per month can be made per text account for a maximum donation of $50.
8. Respond to the confirmation. You will be prompted to confirm your donation.
9. Respond "Yes" for final confirmation and to complete your donation.
Marathon Donation
10. Repeat Step 1, 2, 3 from Section 1. Go to the official website at Komen.org. Place your cursor under the "Get Involved" tab, select "Donate" and scroll to the bottom of the new page and select "Donation." The Susan G. Komen foundation allows people to sponsor runners in various marathons held throughout the country. In this type of donation, you are sponsoring the runner or walker for participating in the upcoming event.
11. Select the appropriate marathon or race. Several different races will be listed on the left side of the page.
12. Enter the participant's first and last name into the provided field. The races listed here have already been automatically linked to the people who have registered for each individual race.
13. Select the participant's name. Results will return, based on the information you entered in Step 3.
14. Provide your billing information and the amount you wish to donate. This includes your name, address, email address, amount you are donating and credit card information inclusive of type, number and security code.
Will or Trust
15. Contact your attorney or other entity in charge of your will or family trust.
16. Inform them that you would like to make a donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Inform them of the amount, percentage and additional terms of your donation. For example, one way to give is to leave a flat donation. Another way is to donate an overall percentage of an estate or trust. If there are any contingencies such as the date when the donation should be made, inform your attorney of that information as well. For example, you may direct the attorney to give 10 percent of your estate; but only after your grandchildren's college has been paid in full.
17.Add the language to your legal documents. Aside from the directives in Step 2, the legal documents should outline the location of the foundation as:
Susan G. Komen for the Cure
5005 Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway
Suite 250
Dallas, Texas 75244
Ph: (877) 465-6636
18. Review and sign the document. The document must have your signature or the signatures required by the trust in order to make the legal document official. After your death or when the directive in the legal document becomes actionable, your attorney or appointed person will make the donation on behalf of you or the trust.
Gifts of Stock
19. Contact your brokerage firm and inform that you would like to donate stock. Stock is a tax deductible donation. The appointed stock is removed from your personal brokerage account and transferred to the charity -- in this case the Susan G. Komen Foundation -- where it is managed by their financial advisors.
20. Inform the broker of the company name and the number of shares of stock you wish to transfer. Your brokerage firm may waive any transaction fees they usually charge because you are transferring stock for charity.
21. Provide your broker with the transfer information. He will need the following information to complete the transaction.
