Radiology techs in Utah assist physicians in diagnosing medical conditions and injuries.
In the state of Utah, those seeking to become a radiology tech have four options for education. Those options include University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, Weber State University and Dixie College, which offer a mix of degrees including a certificate, an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree. Regardless of educational background, radiology techs perform the same functions on the job. The advantage of having an accredited degree, rather than a certificate, is that employees find more employment opportunities in addition to being better prepared for advancement into management or administration. Upon graduation, students will need to secure national certification as required for licensing in Utah.
Instructions
1. Graduate from radiological technology education program offered in the state of Utah. Prospective students should enroll in one of four programs: University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, Weber State University or Dixie College. All four have accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Students will enroll in courses that include biology, anatomy, physiology, imaging and radiography, while participating in hands-on practicums before graduating. The four schools have different procedures for admission and therefore prospective students should research each individual program before applying.
2. After graduation, take and pass the national certification exam offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Applicants must secure a handbook and application from their educational institution as required by the ARRT. The handbook details all requirements to sit for the radiography exam, including types of test questions, length of test, number of questions and a full application. Fees to sit for the exam are $200 in 2010.
3. Gain licensure with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing by submitting the required application. Applicants must submit their ARRT certification, a $70 application fee, along with the completed application provided on the licensing website and mail to the address provided on the application (see Resources).
