Make Your Own Custom Posters & Banners

Posters and banners are used to publicize and decorate events or parties. Create your own custom posters and banners using screen printing techniques. Screen printing allows you to duplicate your image or design multiple times while retaining the handmade quality of each image. When making banners and posters try to keep the written information concise and clear.

Instructions

Preparation

1. Find or design an image and slogan that you want to appear on your posters or banner. Avoid images or lettering styles that will be difficult to cut out.

2. Trace or draw the design of your poster onto a piece of A4 acetate. Place thick cardboard on your work surface and put the acetate on top. Cut out the parts of the design that you want to print.

3. Count how many different letters are used in the slogan for your banner. For example "Congratulations" has 11 different letters as some letters are repeated. Draw or trace each letter onto a separate piece of A4 size acetate. Repeat Step 3 for each letter of the banner.

4. Cut your length of paper for the banner. For each character or letter in your slogan allow 8 inches of length and 12 inches of height. This is the size of a piece of A4 acetate. For gaps or spaces in the slogan, allow 4 inches of length by the same height. For example a banner for "Band Night" would be 76 inches long by 12 inches high.

5. Make a pencil mark every 8 inches along the length of the banner. This will help to line up the letters of your banner in the printing stages.

Printing

6. Create a poster by placing a piece of A4 paper on your work surface. Place the acetate poster stencil down on top of the paper.

7. Put the screen down on top of the stencil. Use masking tape to mask off any areas on the underside of the screen that are not covered by the stencil. Place a dollop of ink on the top of the screen. Use a squeegee at a 45-degree angle to pull the ink down the screen. Pull up the screen from left to right to reveal your printed image.

8. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to create as many posters as you want. You will not need a new dollop of ink every time. Add more ink when there is not enough ink to pull down the screen.

9. Lay out your banner paper. Place the stencil of your first letter on the left end of the paper. Line up the right edge of the stencil with the first pencil mark. Repeat step 2. Pull the stencil off the screen and wash it with water.

10. Place letter stencil two down on the banner paper next to printed letter one. Line up the left and right edges with the pencil marks. Repeat step 2 for this and each following letter until you have completed your slogan. Leave the banner to dry. Wash the frame and stencils with water.
