Health Insurance Plans For Individuals In Maryland

Individuals in Maryland have multiple health insurance plan options. Several national insurance companies offer private individual insurance in Maryland. If you cannot afford or do not qualify for private insurance, the state sponsors several health insurance programs including medical assistance, coverage for children and coverage for those with pre-existing health conditions.

Private Health Insurance

In most areas of the state, you can find plans from carriers such as Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare and Aetna. Individual insurance policies, also called private insurance, is available to those self-employed, unemployed or who do not have the option of participating in a group health insurance plan. Maryland Children's Health Program

Another state managed program is the Maryland Children's Health Program. MCHP provides health insurance to children under age 19 and pregnant women of all ages who show financial need. MCHP eligibility is not based on a parent's financial status and a child may qualify even if their parents do not qualify for Medicare. MCHP offers health insurance coverage for routine care, illness, emergency and accidents at little or no cost to the child or their parents. More information about MCHP is available by calling 800-456-8900.

Maryland Health Insurance Plan

In 2010, the Affordable Care Act mandated federal or state health insurance programs for those with pre-existing medical conditions. Several years prior to this act, Maryland implemented the Maryland Health Insurance Plan, referred to as MHIP, for these individuals. CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield administers MHIP with state and federal funding. MHIP offers coverage to Maryland residents who are unable to obtain private insurance or offered unaffordable premiums due to their pre-existing conditions.
