Deal With Perimenopause

Deal With Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transition into menopause which can last several years. During this time, the body begins a shift in hormone production and the classic symptoms of menopause begin to emerge, such as changes in menstruation, mood swings and hot flashes. Perimenopause can begin as early as the late 30's, but luckily it doesn't have to be unbearable.

Instructions

1. Talk to your doctor about low-dose birth control pills which continue to be the most common method of dealing with perimenopause. Birth control pills help to control hormones and regulate your menstruation, in turn lessening the symptoms of perimenopause. All forms of contraceptives come with side effects and contraindications, so it is important that you thoroughly discuss this option with your doctor.

2. Consider low-dose hormone replacement as well, particularly if your are dealing with severe symptoms of perimenopause. There are many options for hormone therapy, each a bit different for you as an individual. Again, discuss options as well as side effects and contraindications with your doctor.

3. Include more phytoestrogens, or naturally occurring estrogens, in your daily diet to help deal with perimenopause. Flaxseed, soy, clover, black cohosh and other vitamins all help to regulate hormone fluctuations; however, it is best to speak to a naturopath or herbalist about dosage recommendations for you and your stage of perimenopause. Because some people are more sensitive to phytoestrogens than others, this option may take a bit of trial and error.

4. Get plenty of exercise, as studies have shown that perimenopausal women who workout 30 minutes a day, 3 or 4 days a week experience a lessening of symptoms. Not only can exercise help you to manage the tendency for weight gain before, during and after menopause, it will help you to deal with symptoms.

5. Practice deep breathing meditations for at least 15 minutes each day, as it has been proven that the simple act of deep breathing can cut hot flashes caused by perimenopause by up to 50 percent. Additionally, the increased flow of oxygen will boost energy and reduce fatigue, another common symptom.
