Obtain A Nonimmigrant Visa To The United States

To visit the USA you need to show that you will leave before your visa expires.

You can visit the United States for pleasure, business, study or many other reasons. However, because so many people try to enter the country to work illegally, the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services considers your application to be for immigration unless you can prove otherwise. According to the USCIS website, you must prove you "maintain a foreign residence that you have no intention of abandoning" and can "support yourself financially while in the United States." To do so, you need to go to an interview at a U. S. Embassy.

Instructions

1. Locate your local U. S. Embassy. You can find it by going to the U.S. Department of State website and clicking on the country (see References). This will bring up information including phone number, address and the bank where you will need to pay your fees.

2. Make a reservation for an interview. You must first purchase a PIN number, which costs $12 as of 2010. Once you have it, you can call the embassy and make your interview appointment. You can get your PIN activated instantly by calling the embassy at the number listed on its website and paying for it with a credit card. Or you can pay the $12 at the bank listed on the embassy website, but your PIN won’t be activated until the next business day.

3. Pay your fees. Even if you used your credit card to reserve your interview, you still have to go to the bank to deposit $140 in the embassy’s account to pay your visa application fee. If you reserve your interview at the bank, you can pay the $140 at the same time. The fee is the same at all embassies around the world.

4. Fill out your application form online. You can reach the application form by following links at your embassy’s web page, but they all link to the State Department’s form on its website (see References). Use the drop-down box to select the country where you will apply. You may partially complete the form as you go, and save it online to collect information. But when you finish it, submit it and print it and take with you to your interview. It will print a bar code that will allow you entry into the embassy.

5. Collect relevant documents for your interview, including your passport, photos and application form. You must prove to the interviewing officer that you have strong ties to your home country that compel you to return when your permitted time expires. Owning a home, a car or having a good job helps, but each individual’s situation is different. Bring documents to show you have enough money to support yourself while you are in the United States.

6. Go to your interview. Arrive on time. Make sure you have all the required documents. The interviewing officer has final say, and you cannot appeal the decision. However, you can apply again if your situation changes. If he grants the visa, he will keep your passport and send it back to you in a few days.
