Although tourmaline is often considered to be a single mineral it is actually a group of related minerals. Tourmaline is a crystal silicate mineral that usually occurs in long, slender columns. It is distinguished by its three-sided prisms. Tourmaline comes in a variety of colors including yellow, blue, green, pink, red, black, bluish black, brown and multicolored. Some types of the mineral change color when viewed from various angles. Tourmaline that is pink at one end and green at the other is known as watermelon tourmaline. No two tourmaline are exactly alike.


Geography


Tourmaline is mined mainly in Brazil and Africa but it is found in several parts of the world. In the United States it is found primarily in Maine and California. Tourmaline is also mined in Tanzania, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Nambia and Sri Lanka.


Function


All colors of tourmaline are faceted into gems for use in jewelry. It is a popular, beautiful and affordable gem. The wide variety of shades also make it versatile. Tourmaline is cut into rounds, ovals, triangles, trillions and cabochons. Heat treatment will enhance the color of the mineral. Tourmaline is used for the carving of ornamental figures as well as jewelry.


Types


Each color of tourmaline has its own name and is considered a different variety. Rubellite is the name given to the pink to red variety. Dravite is brown tourmaline. The black variety is known as Schorl whereas Siberite is tourmaline of a purple hue. The blue variety of the gemstone is called Indigolite. The wide variety of coloration in tourmaline is due to its variable chemical composition.


Care


Tourmaline jewelry pieces should be properly cared for and stored when not in use. Tourmaline should not be cleaned in ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Use warm, soapy water instead. Tourmaline should be stored in a jewelry bag or soft cloth to prevent cracking or other damage.


Folklore


Most gemstones have quite a bit of folklore associated with them and tourmaline is no exception. The gem is believed to increase self-confidence, amplify psychic energy and dispel fear and grief. It is also used to aid concentration and improve communication. Tourmaline is also believed to have healing properties.
