What Do Sonograms Show

Sonography, or ultrasound examination, is a diagnostic imaging technique that projects high-frequency sound waves into the body to show images on a computer. Many conditions are diagnosed and treated with the help of sonography.

Pregnancy

Sonography is often used in pregnancy to examine and evaluate a fetus. Sonograms are also used to look for problems in the ovaries and uterus.

Heart

Doctors may use sonography to look at the heart and blood vessels. Ultrasound will show any blockages or narrowing in the blood vessels and allow the physician to diagnose many heart problems.

Biopsy

Ultrasound can be used to aid in needle biopsy, where needles are used to remove a sample of cells from an abnormal area of the body to undergo laboratory tests.

Examination

Sonograms may be used to investigate areas of the body in response to symptoms like pain or infection, or to evaluate damage to organs after illness.

Other Uses

Sonograms can also be used to reveal abnormalities in the prostate or scrotum, examine the thyroid gland, or diagnose some types of cancer.
