Start A Fundraiser For All Types Of Cancer

Put together a fundraising campaign to fight cancer with others in your community.

Pink ribbons and breast cancer usually dominate our minds when we think about cancer fundraising. But as we all know, breast cancer is far from the only form of cancer that needs funding for research and treatments. Starting a fundraiser in the fight against any type of cancer can be a large or small undertaking, depending on how large of an event you want to host and your fundraising goals.

Instructions

1. Get a team together. Find individuals from your office, friends, family, church or other civic organization to join with you in this fundraising effort. Set fundraising and campaign goals, and assign responsibilities to individuals depending on their skills and areas of interest. Decide if you want to be all-inclusive and conduct a general cancer fundraiser or if you want to highlight a specific type of cancer.

2. Join an organization dedicated to fighting cancer, such as the American Cancer Society. This step is optional, though many times organizations like this provide access to planning and promotional materials to get you going. Your team can even join an event such as Relay for Life and use the community attention and marketing to increase the amount of money you raise.

3. Decide generate funds. The money you raise has to come from one or a few sources of revenue. With your team, decide if you want to sell products such as shirts, wristbands, coffee mugs or pens and give all the proceeds to charity, or if you want to host a sponsored event. For an event, you could host a 5k race, a sports tournament or a dance-a-thon.

4. Spread the word. Let others outside of your team know that you are raising money to fight cancer. Advertise your product or event and ask for sponsorships or donations. As you increase public knowledge about your fundraiser, you'll increase the amount of money you raise and how much you provide to cancer research and treatment centers.

5. Send in your money. Collect all the money you and your teammates raised. Reimburse team members who spent money on buying products or advertising materials. Write a check to the cancer charity, society, research or treatment center of your choice and put it in the mail.
