While a number of New York City's colleges and universities offer nursing programs at the baccalaureate level, only a select few community colleges and vocational high schools feature certificate programs in licensed practical nursing. A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is responsible for the daily needs of patients and reports directly to registered nurses and doctors.
Bronx Community College
Located in the northernmost New York City borough of the Bronx, Bronx Community College (BCC) was established in 1957 to meet the higher educational needs of area students. BCC is a part of the city's City University of New York (CUNY) system. The college's licensed practical nursing program is housed within the Department of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. An evening and weekend program designed to accommodate students with careers, many of the program's credits can be transferred to fulfill registered nursing degree program requirements. The three-semester curriculum features coursework in physiology, pharmacology and practical nursing, as well as general education courses like composition and rhetoric. Other courses in the program include nursing skills and pediatric nursing. Upon graduation, students receive a certificate in licensed practical nursing.

Eugenio María de Hostos Community College
The Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College (HCC) is part of the CUNY system of public higher education institutes in New York City. Located in the Bronx, many of the college's programs are designed to accommodate both English- and Spanish-speaking students. A three-semester program, HCC's licensed practical nursing program prepares students for a certificate upon completion of the program. Alternatively, students can take additional courses to qualify for transfer into the college's associate's registered nursing program. The program's intensive curriculum combines nursing and general science classes, as well as a required writing course. Clinical nursing, pharmacology and general psychology are some of the other required classes for completion of the certificate program.

Medgar Evers College
Opened in 1970, Medgar Evers College was established to serve area students in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. The practical nursing certificate program is a three-semester program. Admission requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, in addition to other eligibility criteria. Courses include Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical and Surgical Nursing, and Maternal Child Health. Many of these courses have general education prerequisites, as well as other classes within the department that must be completed before registering for a given class. Additionally, the college offers a review course to help students prepare for the state licensing examination.
